A Dance Retreat in the Jungle
“Since the beginning of time mankind has used music and dance to commune with the spirit of nature and the spirit of the universe.”
- Affordable, High-Quality Training
- Natural, Nourishing Environment
- Tailored to Individual Abilities
- International Collaborative Community
Western countries benefit from abundant professional training opportunities and an extensive range of dance techniques, methods and styles, whilst those in India have little to choose from. Our programme is a first for India, in that we provide the full range of contemporary dance practices in- line with International institutions. Our pricing and scholarship programme provides a space for all, to train in broad ranging contemporary dance practices together, irrespective of nationality or economic background.
Goa is a unique part of India. offering not just an escape from the pollution of the metropolitan cities but also a multi-ethnic and international creative vibe. Our base, Jungle Dance is a 21/2 acre site, designed inline with the philosophy of permaculture, just 10 minutes inland from the beautiful beaches of Arambol and Mandrem. This is an ideal environment for intensive physical study and creativity, with a cafe serving nutritious and locally sourced meals daily, a pool for swimming and relaxation, a theatre and dance studios.
We cater for professionals as well as advanced beginners. To ensure safe progress and continued growth, regular individual tutorials are provided by faculty to assess your progress and give creative mentorship for your unique goals and needs;
whether that be technical feedback, rehearsal space for choreographic research or an Individual attendance agreement, your needs and goals will always influence the objectives of the programme.
We benefit heavily from being situated within the creative hub that is Arambol, Goa. Musicians, performers, artists, yoga & massage therapists as well as movement practitioners make their home here every season. As the arts are a vital component of sustaineable development it is important to bring Indian artists from across the country into this environment to share within the international community that has built up here and so we actively encourage creative exchange with participants and faculty.
Contemporary Dance Training Course
“The only way to do it, is to do it!”
― Merce Cunningham
For the first time in India a full range of American Modern Dance techniques are taught in detail, providing a solid grounding in the historical lineage of contemporary dance practice. These classes are based on the vocabularies of Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Lester Horton & Jose Limon
Further completing the technical aspect of the programme in-line with the requirements of todays international dance institutions and companies are classes in release technique, floorwork, Flying Low (by David Zambrano) and Contact Improvisation (by Steve Paxton)
Experiential Anatomy, Movement Meditation & classes based on the methodologies of Mosche Feldenkrais provide an holistic approach to training, promoting efficiency of energy expenditure, a healthier, more intelligent body as well as an infinite source of creative and choreographic inspiration
Within the context of both workshops and performance rehearsals our faculty will be sharing and instructing participants in their compositional methodologies and processes, as well as giving guidance and mentorship to those participants intending to make their own work whilst on the residency
Asana practitioners inspired the early modern dance pioneers and we go full circle in immersing ourselves in that practice, with a focus on the methodologies of B.K.S Iyengar and Joseph Pilates. Emphasis is on alignment, breath, flexibility, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance
& Performance Platform
“Creativity is an act of defiance.”
― Twyla Tharp
Workshops and rehearsals for pieces made by our teaching faculty, make up the choreography and performance studies aspect of the programme, with visiting faculty also making contributions to a broad ranging repertoire performed by participants
We encourage applicants with solo and group choreographic interests of their own, to develop their work alongside that of our faculty, within the context of the residency. This can be in the form of work already made, work in progress or research ideas.
On-site are basic huts, luxury huts, and a 4-bed dorm. Availability is limited for on-site accommodation this year so do book quickly! We also have a range of very nice local houses, guesthouses and apartments within walking distance. All options are shared double rooms. Single occupancy can also be arranged.
Jungle Pool Goa
A community NGO initiative by Jungle Dance Cafe owner Lucie Walta, providing hydrotherapy for children in her care with physical disabilities and swimming access for locals and visitors year round. We have a dedicated pre-lunch swimming hour, perfect for cardio training or just for relaxing muscles and mind after training!
Nathaniel Parchment (UK)
Nathaniel trained for 6 years in London, including at the London Contemporary Dance School, was a part of the National Youth Dance Company, and has worked with Shobana Jeyasingh, Lloyd Newson, Stan Won’t Dance and Akademi South Asian Dance UK.
Nathaniel has been teaching across India for the past 4 years and has developed a unique viewpoint and experience of the dance sector there. Perceiving a great need for intensive study of the foundations of contemporary dance practice, namely that of Modern Dance, he set about initiating the Goa Dance Residency as a solution to this need, with the aim of providing a broad training at the standard of international institutions, with accessibility for all irrespective of economic status.
Nathaniel's classes span the range of practice from Modern Dance, Post-modern dance and somatics, with a view to giving the dancer a thorough, rigourous training and vocabulary. His style is typified by an expansive use of space and meticulous musicality, in order to facilitate excellence in dance performance and creative expression

Release, Improv & choreography
Irene Fiordilino is an Italian choreographer, performer and dance teacher. She graduated with Distinction at Trinity Laban (MFA Choreography, 2018) and graduated with honors at Academia Nazionale di Danza di Roma (BA Contemporary Dance and Choreography, 2016).
She has performed for many choreographers such as Adriana Borriello and Tony Thatcher, and she has presented internationally some of her own choreographic work.
Irene teaches Dynamic Release Technique, combining the main principles of Release with some Floor-work elements and some structural aspects of Modern Techniques. Dynamic Release allows students to challenge the use of weight for generating momentum and achieve flow and efficiency while travelling through the space.
Irene also leads the workshop Sounding Bodies, a practice of movement investigation questioning improvisation and composition under a new perspective. Sounding Bodies explores the possibilities of hearing and listening to movement, appreciating and taking advantage of its sound-qualities.
"I consider the Goa Residency Program as the perfect place to share my practice and my experience, exploring new ideas in a trustworthy and inspirational environment, within a group of talented and enthusiastic young artists; my goal is transforming dance technique and choreographic research in a creative and challenging experience for the whole group!"

International Creative Exchange
“When you truly accept that those children in some far off place in the global village have the same value as you in God’s eyes or even in just your eyes, then your life is forever changed; you see something that you can’t un-see.”
The residency has become a beautiful space whereby Indian and International artists can forge lasting creative and personal relationships.
It has been a joy to see the various ways in which participants and faculty have taken those relationships on, into the wider world, sharing their creative activities.
We encourage these collaborations and hope to build on this by increasing opportunities for dissemination of the work nationally and internationally, via live and online platforms, festivals and a national touring company.

Dance Scholarship Programme
In 2018 we gave scholarships and concessions, ranging from 50% reduction in fees, full tuition scholarships as well as combined tuition, accommodation and food scholarships; to the following participants, depending on individual economic need
Whilst it is the norm in western countries for there to be affordable and free training readily available for talented students from low economic backgrounds, in India this is extremely rare, with little to no funding available from government institutions, trusts or NGOs, especially for contemporary dance. The foundation of our residency is and has been to provide tuition and accommodation scholarships to deserving students.
Please share our crowdfunding campaign which will enable us to secure the next batch of scholarships, increase the amount of help we can give and also help maintain the quality of the course.
Join us on the residency this season and you are automatically making a huge contribution to those participants who wouldn’t ordinarily have access to these opportunities.
